The Pentagon:

(1) Positive Statement:

What positive thing happen as a result of what you have completed so far?

I've shown that I can be self-managing and stay on task.

(2) EQ Content:

Pick a piece of research or your interview. How has it helped you improve your understanding of your topic?

The articles I have read on machine shops in general provided a lot of insight.

(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project?

Staying on task and just pulling through even if the work is getting tedious.

(4) What hasn't worked so far?

Being secluded. I am told that communication is vital in almost all forms of work and i find it quite hard to do that.

(5) Finding Value: Based on your experience so far,

I would like to know how I can improve myself through the mentor ship. I would also like to interview other programmers to see how they think.

Interview Preparation

1. I plan to interview my dad, Daniel King.  He's been programming for years and according to his boss and co-workers, is one of the best and fastest they've seen. He is also good at separating work from private matters, and will be sure to give me an excellent interview.

2. The original five questions will be asked of course, but  I may need to ask others for some clarification or if other ideas rise up at the time.

Topic Choice

Topic

My topic is machine programming because it is something that has always been a part of my life and is basically making 3D art which is similar to what I wish to do for a job. Also, the fact that in machine programming, you can make something exist out of nothing but metal and a picture you drew is fascinating.

ESLRs

I plan to become self-disciplined this year as I no longer have the time to mess up because of my lack of will to do things at the moment I get them. This improves myself as an iPoly citizen because in senior project, no one else's grade will be affected because of my procrastination and I'll have no one but myself to keep me in check.

My communication skills will improve during this project as I will need to often check that if a problem with part making is because of my own mistake or one on the actual machine area by someone else. I cannot allow myself to get intimidated by others if I know that it was no fault of mine.

I plan to take as much info as I can get while being mentored from people who have been doing this job for years. This will make me an effective learner because even if the information may start to seem tedious, I will make sure not to let a moment of it go to waste

Technology is what makes my senior project possible. Without it, this job profession wouldn't even exist. Through out my experience, I will have a firmer grasp on what technology can do. One that I never took time to notice before.

Summer Mentorship Component

Literal (Know)

Hours:

For two days, I worked on a program to create a simple part that was checked by someone else and later made from a clump of metal and sold.

Contact Info: All Time Machine (909) 673-1899

Literal (Need to know)

How complicated can the parts become?
What kinds of parts can different machines make?
What happens when the program is off?
What else can cause a part to be made incorrectly other than programming?

Interpretive

The most important thing I learned from my experience was independence. Often enough, I could not just ask someone after each move if what I did was correct. Everyone else was either by the machines, checking products, or busy with some other task. I had to just continue making the part until someone had enough free time to check up on me and see how I progressing and if I had made any mistakes. I had no one behind me making sure I was doing the work or if i was doing it the correct way and that was something I'm not used to.

Applied

My experience helped me chose programming because I liked Watching a bunch of numbers and lines slowly become something recognizable as a part and seeing the finished product exit the machine correctly, even if it was simple, filled me with satisfaction. While at times it would get tedious to stare at a screen all day, the amount of freedom I had by myself made up for it and the environment was relatively friendly and everyone, while not meaning to, was looking out for one another.
